Art, Poetry, and Motherhood | Meet the Artist Exhibition & Discussion
20/11/2024 - From 18h30 to 22h - Public
“So what’s it like, this love?”
Experience an inspiring evening with visual artist and poet Mimi Kunz. In her new book, Mother Tongue (published by The Kyoudai Press) she tells the story of her daughter’s birth and first year of life. As she shares her experience of being a young mother and her moments of marvel, fear, and laughter, a revelation occurs. The body of mother and child are discovered as our first language, our mother tongue.
This event features an intimate conversation where Mimi discusses the challenges and triumphs of balancing motherhood with a dedication to art. Engage in thought-provoking discussions on identity, presence, and the role of women in the art world. Discover the resilience and creativity that mothers bring to their artistry.
Mimi Kunz is a visual artist and poet. A Buddhist monk once told her to ‘put the mind in the body’ — advice which has shaped her life and art. Curious about the body as a language, she observes its universal expressions and personal characteristics, pointing out the unconscious gestures through which we read each other’s bodies.
Mimi studied Painting and Graphics at the Staatliche Akademie Karlsruhe, Germany. Her work has been shaped by residencies in Vietnam, and exhibited in Brussels (Maison d’Art Actuel des Chartreux, ODRADEK) and internationally (Casa del Arte, Concepción, Chile, Nature Art Biennale, South Korea). It can be found in private collections across all continents and has been supported by the Goethe Institut Hanoi and Culture Moves Europe.
Living in Brussels with her young family, Mimi lets her life and work merge and inspire each other. This might mean that a child will crawl on stage while she’s reading her poetry.
This event is organized with Idealist Quaterly.
