How to Design Gender Inclusive, Sustainable Cities
18/10/2023 - From 19h30 - Members & GuestsRegistration mandatory
Can urban planning bridge the gender gap? And what does ‘for us, by us’ really mean when it comes to involving women in urban planning decisions?
This second event in the diversity, equity & inclusion series Intersectional Women explores how gender impacts our experiences of urban life. Cities have historically been built for and by men - unsurprising given that even today women occupy just 10% of the highest-ranking jobs in the world’s leading architecture firms.
But momentum for gender mainstreaming is growing in many European cities, including Brussels.
We’ll discuss why this is, and how our health, professional opportunities, social activities, safety and more are inextricably linked to how urban spaces are designed. And, moreover, what steps we all can take to create equitable urban experiences for women of all backgrounds.
Speakers:
- Safaa Charafi - architect, urbanist and founder of Urban Inclusion, an independent consulting firm that focuses on advancing gender-sensitive and inclusive urban planning
- Sophie Feyder - independent researcher, curator and mobility activist with Heroes 4 Zero, a Brussels-based non-profit
The event will be moderated by Tamara Makoni, inclusion specialist and CEO of Kazuri Consulting.
About the event series:
Intersectional Women explores the fact that while gender unites us, understanding how our differences result in diverse lived experiences is key to achieving true inclusion and equality for all women. The events bring intersectionality to life and dive under the hood, putting spotlight on workplace experience, urban planning, neurodiversity, accessibility, and more.
“If you don’t have a lens that’s been trained to look at how various forms of discrimination come together, you’re unlikely to develop a set of policies that will be as inclusive as they need to be.”
Kimberlé Crenshaw
