Earlier this year, we welcomed a researcher into our community who aimed to answer a vital question: "Do we really need women-only spaces, and why?"

She spent time at The Nine, observing its unique atmosphere, meeting members, and analyzing the interactions within this women-exclusive environment. Her observations have now been transformed into an insightful ethnographic study that delves into the role and relevance of spaces like The Nine in today’s society.

In this engaging talk, she will explore the history and significance of women-only spaces, using The Nine as a case study. Through fieldwork and theoretical analysis, the discussion will focus on how these spaces foster empowerment, social capital, and personal growth. By examining feminist infrastructure and reviewing academic research, Anna Verbeeck will offer a thought-provoking perspective on the need for women-only spaces, backed by data and real-world examples.

Anna Verbeeck

Hello, my name is Anna and live in Belgium. I have always enjoyed academia and thus after obtaining my bachelor’s in Sociology and English Literature, a master’s in Sociology, an advanced master’s in Anthropology, I am now pursuing a PhD. For my master’s thesis in Anthropology I knew I wanted to learn more about women-only spaces in Belgium and the concepts of gender and space in general. After looking for women-only clubs in Belgium, I quickly realized there weren’t that many. So, I quickly found The Nine, which ended up being the perfect fieldwork location for my research about why women-only spaces are relevant in today’s society. Although I enjoyed studying Anthropology, I will always be more of a sociologist and so now, for my PhD, I am researching elite student club culture in Belgium and the Netherlands.
